A short, plain-language guide for homes and camps on septic around Greater Sudbury, Manitoulin, French River and Nipissing. It uses general advice from public sources. Your system's design, age and use matter, so ask a licensed septic professional about your own system.
How a typical tank and leach bed work.
How often to pump
Public Health Sudbury & Districts advises: "Pump out your septic tank at least once every two to three years" (PHSD). Larger households or heavy use may need it more often. Ask the pumper to measure the sludge and scum layers and to pump every compartment.
Wipes (including "flushable" wipes), paper towels, dental floss, diapers and feminine products
Cooking grease, fats and oils
Coffee grounds, cat litter and food scraps
Paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides and medications
Large amounts of harsh cleaners or bleach, which can harm the bacteria in the tank
Spread out laundry loads and fix leaky toilets and taps so the tank isn't flooded with water.
Signs of trouble
Slow drains or gurgling plumbing throughout the house
Sewage smells near the tank or leach bed
Soggy ground, pooling water or unusually green grass over the leach bed
Sewage backing up into the lowest drains
If you see these, limit water use and call a septic professional. Contact PHSD about permits before any repair or replacement.
Protect the leach bed
Don't drive, park or build over the tank or leach bed.
Plant only grass over the bed. Keep trees and shrubs away so roots don't clog the pipes.
Send roof downspouts and sump discharge away from the leach bed.
Winter tips for Northern Ontario
Leave the snow: snow cover insulates the tank and bed. Don't pack it down with vehicles, snowmobiles or foot traffic over the system.
Keep water flowing: regular, normal use keeps warm water moving through the pipes. If you leave for a long time, ask a professional how to prepare the system.
Don't use antifreeze or additives in the system unless a professional recommends it.
Plan pump-outs before freeze-up: late summer or fall is easier than digging out a lid in January. Mark the lid location so a pumper can find it.
Seasonal camps: the Sudbury area has many seasonal properties. Have the tank checked before you close for the season.
